Anti-Bullying

Junior School Bullying/Harassment Policy

A Caring Environment

Danebank School seeks to provide a safe and just environment for all its members. It is important the rights of others in the community.

What is Bullying?
Bullying is behaviour which stops an individual from feeling comfortable in this shared environment . It may take the form of verbal or physical harassment, teasing, rumour spreading, exclusion or pressure to do things of which the individual does not approve.

The right to be respected
•  Students have the right to say what they think, provided it is not offensive to others
•  Students' right to privacy, with possessions, or time, should be respected
•  Students have the right to feel safe at all times at school
•  No-one will be liked by everyone, but everyone can respect each other's personality differences and be polite and kind. There is need and room for all the different personalities we have in the school.

Goal
The school will seek to be pro-active in promoting an environment in which the students understand bullying is wrong and that individuals have responsibility to report bullying if they become aware of it.

Strategies
1. Reported cases of bullying will always be investigated by the school. There is a range of consequences which the school will apply in the event of bullying.
2. The school will provide reporting methods for students, staff and parents to support the Policy.
3. The school will conduct anonymous surveys within the school community from time to time to assess where bullying may be occurring, the kinds of bullying which may be taking place, and who may be responsible for it.
4. All people concerned (victim, bully and witnesses) will be supported with the aim of resolving the issues involved in the particular case of bullying.
5. The school affirms the expectations that adults will model appropriate anti-bullying behaviour.

How will bullying be dealt with in the School ?
Appropriate to the age and stages of development of children in the Junior School the Personal Development/ Health/Physical Education Syllabus aims to develop in each student the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes needed to lead healthy active and fulfilling lives. In doing so, the syllabus will form the basis for students to adopt a responsible and productive role in society. Children's development can be viewed on a continuum. Random incidents that may have the appearance of bullying can be skillfully treated by parents and educators This enables the child to learn the appropriate way to deal with bullying and non-bullying situations rather than resort to aggressive behaviours. As a school community we will not allow cases of bullying to go unreported but will be responsive.

P rocedure
(a) This requires students to:

  • refuse to be involved in any bullying situation
  • report the incident or suspected incident
  • be accepting of differences

(b) This requires staff to:

  • be role m odels in word and action at all times
  • be observ ant of signs of distress or suspected incidents of bullying
  • make eff orts to remove occasions for bullying
  • report suspected incidents to the appropriate staff member such as the classroom teacher, coordinators , Head of the Junior School or Principal.

(c) This requires parents to:

  • primarily act as role models, modeling appropriate conflict resolution strategies
  • advise your daughter to tell a staff member personally about the incident. If possible allow her to report and deal with the problem herself. She can gain much respect through taking the initiative and dealing with the problem without parental involvement
  • communicate to your daughter that your involvement, if necessary, will be helpful for the situation
  • inform the School if bullying is suspected
  • be will to attend interviews at the School if your daughter is involved in any bullying incident

Absence from School

Junior School Absence from School
(a) On the day of return after an absence, a note from parents or guardian should be given to the Class Teacher. However, on Carnival and Excursion days the School should be notified on the morning concerned.

(b) The note should show:

  • The date
  • Students name
  • Students class
  • The reason for students absence
  • The signature of parent or guardian

These notes are filed by the School as a Government requirement and maintained for 7 years.

(c) If absences are known in advance, please bring a note as above and give it to the Class Teacher or the Junior Office the day before.

(d) If a student is absent for more than two days without explanation, the School will notify the parent or guardian automatically and request an explanation. The School must be notified in cases of anticipated extended absences.

(e) Leave: Request for EXTENDED leave should be made well in advance of the anticipated date of departure. The automatic granting of such leave should not be assumed. SHORT leave for pre-planned medical reasons should also be sought as far in advance as possible of the anticipated leave.

The News Sheet
This is prepared every second Friday and contains important information and dates. The aim is to keep parents informed, and it is essential reading for all Danebank families throughout the year. It is available on the web site: danebank.nsw.edu.au The News Sheet can be emailed home when an email address is supplied to the school.

Appointments with Class Teachers
All appointments must be made through the Junior School Office. Please allow 3 days for confirmation.

Arrivals and Departures
(Other than at normal times)

Arrivals
Arriving late to school: Students who arrive late should report to the Junior Office and sign the late book before proceeding to class. The late note should be given to the class teacher.

Departures
Students are not permitted to leave the School grounds during school hours unless permission has first been obtained from the Head of Junior School, who will make the appropriate arrangements. Contact with parents regarding such departures will be made through the Junior School Office. As far as possible, parents are urged to make appointments (e.g. Doctor, Dentist etc.) out of school hours.

Visitors to the School
Visitors to the school need to report to the Junior Office to collect an identification badge to wear when moving around the school.

Medicines
It is school policy that students requiring regular medication will need to bring the medication in a measured dose in a container clearly marked with their name and class to the office.

A note from home must accompany ALL medication with details of times to be administered.

Tablets should be in a container with daily dose compartments. The correct dose of medicine should be measured into a sealed container e.g. a specimen bottle or empty tablet bottle. Such containers may be purchased from chemists.

Parents/guardians of K-2 students requiring intermittent or emergency medication (i.e. asthma sprays) may also leave their medication in the office to be administered when necessary. The medication will be held in the fridge or in Sick-Bay.

Students in Years 3-6 will be expected to bring their Asthma medication to school and keep it in their bags.

It is the student's responsibility to remember to come to the office for the medication at the required time. If you are concerned that your daughter will not remember, it may be helpful to put a little note in her lunch box to jog her memory.

The staff will be only too happy to provide this service if the correct procedure is followed.

Students are expected to self administer the medication under supervision.

Parents of any child who received regular medication for ongoing health management need to inform the school to ensure continuing care of duty.
